The Funhouse (1981)

Synopsis:

A group of teenagers decides to spend the night in the funhouse of their local carnival. Not supposed to be there, they are the unfortunate witness of a terrible murder.

The Funhouse, by horror master Tobe Hooper (Texas Chainsaw Massacre,Poltergeist, etc.) took me totally by surprise. I have seen quite a lot of 80′s slasher and, let’s face it, they are all somehow a bit similar. But this one truly has a little something extra. Of course, the bunch of stupid teens is still there, and the intellectual level of the movie is not high, but this one does not take itself so seriously and the result is extremely entertaining.

The first half-hour, when they walk through the carnival and visit the various shows, is a wonderful moment that makes you feel like you’re a kid, only a kid that is waiting for slaughter to happen, because the best thing about Tobe Hooper films is certainly the gore. The least we can say is that this film has great gore. It is the essence of splatter, with lots of cool but gruesome murders, and some great ways of shooting them!

The drawback is the story which is very incoherent, and the lack of realism. The film gets a little boring towards the end, which is very predictable. At some points, you really know what is going to happen before it happens.

To conclude, slasher lovers will love it, but even others should definitely give it a chance, for it is a true horror classic!
