Contracted (2013)

Synopsis:

A young girl has sex with a stranger and the repercussions are horrifying

Now this movie could have been called “A zombie in the making” because that’s exactly what it’s about. A lesbian girl goes to a party after breaking up with her girlfriend, gets roofied by a creepy guy who has just left the morgue after having sex with a corpse, and then gets raped on the backseat of his car. The following days, she starts having weird symptoms, like losing a lot of blood, her eyes become red and later her irises lose all the color, she hears sharp deafening noises, her nails are decomposing and falling, her veins become prominent in color while her skin goes pale etc.

I liked the fact that she goes to the doctor, twice. Once, the second day when she realizes that she’s losing too much blood for a normal period, and the third day when her eyes weren’t normal. But the doctor can’t figure out what’s wrong with her other than the fact that she might have caught STD, so she’s left all by herself to deal with the new and unsettling disease. Now while she reacted normal and real like to something unnatural that was happening to her body(a thing that misses in horror movies), her family and friends aren’t all that worried that she’s cadaveric pale and she throws up blood in the toilet. Not even her decaying teeth and white eyes raise questions…

While my description may sound more like a drama than a horror flick, don’t get fooled. There are some stomach churning scenes which will make you quiver and cover your eyes. The director did a great job creating a heavy atmosphere without the suspense and gore we’re usually expecting in this type of movie, while the dialogue tried to be natural and easy. The actress playing the zombie girl is the only one memorable in this low budget horror which is totally fine because she occupies 90% of the screen time.

It was realistic, disgusting, and it left me with an uneasy feeling. It made me want to write this review and recommend it to all of you, people who are reading my review right now. If you want to see a person decomposing while doing her daily routine, go for it! It will worth your time.

7.5 / 10

Contracted follows the descent into madness of a young girl who gradually experiences the horrors of what seems to be a really bad MST. The story is quite simple, maybe a little too simple for me, but delivers exactly what you would expect from such a movie: psychological drama and terribly gross scenes. Therefore, you’ll find your lot of vaginal bleeding, puking, and many other horrible side-effects involved in the zombie transformation. This was the great part, the make-up work is greatly done and those who are into the disturbing genre may enjoy it.

The problem for me was that there is not more to it. The plot is mono-dimensional and does deliver any real surprise. The acting is alright I guess, the change from a totally normal girl to a real monster being credible all right, but that didn’t seem to make a great movie in my case.
